Licensed acupuncturists in New Jersey would gain authority to order diagnostic tests including x-rays, CT scans, MRIs, bone scans, electrodiagnostic tests, bioanalytical laboratory tests, and hormone saliva tests consistent with acupuncture practice.

"Expanded practice" would allow acupuncturists to prescribe, administer, inject, compound, and dispense homeopathic medicines, sterile water, saline solution, vitamins, minerals, amino acids, herbal extracts, procaine, lidocaine, and blood products.

Previously licensed acupuncturists can obtain expanded practice certification by completing at least 8 hours of diagnostic test ordering training, 60 hours of injection therapy coursework, and 40 hours of intravenous therapy training with passage of the National IV Association technician examination.

The National IV Association certification must be renewed biennially with completion of 25 continuing education credits.

The bill takes effect on the first day of the 10th month following enactment and applies to new licensure applications and renewals from that date forward.
