Graduating students at all New Jersey public and nonpublic schools, colleges, universities, and licensed proprietary institutions may request their diploma display a preferred name without providing legal documentation of a name or gender change

Schools may deny preferred name requests if the name is intended to misrepresent identity, avoid legal obligations, harm the institution's reputation, or is derogatory, obscene, or otherwise inappropriate

Former students who provide legal documentation (driver's license, birth certificate, passport, social security card, or court order) of a name or gender change can have their official records updated

Schools must reissue transcripts, diplomas, and other documents with updated legal names upon request, and may charge a nominal fee for reissuance

Takes effect on the first full day of the third month following enactment
