New Jersey residents purchasing a passenger automobile through a private sale may obtain temporary registration via the Motor Vehicle Commission website, allowing them to legally operate the vehicle for 3 days without permanent registration or title transfer.

Applicants must submit an online application including buyer and seller information, vehicle details (make, model, VIN, odometer reading), insurance policy information, and certification of proper insurance coverage under the Motor Vehicle Security-Responsibility Law.

Upon application submission, the Commission provides an electronic receipt as proof of temporary registration and a printable temporary license plate that must be displayed on the vehicle.

Sellers can submit an electronic form with a copy of the title to the Commission's website, which releases them from ownership liability as of the submission date.

Violations carry fines up to $100, while intentional misstatements on applications are subject to existing penalties for falsifying information to the Commission; during a declared public health emergency, the Chief Administrator may extend the temporary operation period to 10 days.
