Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) volunteers may be appointed to perform traffic duties during emergencies or disasters for terms up to five years

Appointed members must pass a physical examination, complete training approved by the New Jersey Police Training Commission, and take an oath filed with the municipal clerk

CERT traffic officers may direct traffic on roadways until law enforcement arrives or at public events with approval and supervision from the local chief law enforcement officer or State Police Superintendent

Officers must wear ANSI-certified Class 3 safety vests with authorized CERT emblems and carry whistles, flashlights, traffic wands, and gloves

CERT traffic officers acting in good faith within their training receive civil liability protection and cannot supersede law enforcement officers
