New Jersey school districts, charter schools, and renaissance school projects using AI-enabled surveillance systems (including video surveillance, x-ray machines, or body scanners) must adopt a formal policy governing their use.

Required policy elements include: description of the surveillance system installed, types of information collected, how collected information will be used, and plans for information access in compliance with state and federal student records laws.

Schools must post prominent signage in buildings and on grounds indicating that AI-capable surveillance systems are in use.

Boards must distribute the adopted policy to all parents and guardians of students within the district or school.

The bill takes effect immediately and applies starting with the first full school year following enactment.
