Retired PERS members may accept full-time employment or independent contracts with small public employers (cities under 25,000 population or counties under 100,000 population) without losing their retirement allowances

Eligibility requires the retired member had no prior employment or contract with that specific public employer and does not reenroll in PERS

Each qualifying public employer may employ no more than four retired members under this exemption at any given time

Public employers must pay contributions to PERS for exempt retired employees at the total contribution rate equivalent to what they would pay for a participating employee in a similar position
