Peace officers investigating unauthorized speed contests or trick driving displays must inspect vehicles if they have reasonable cause to believe the vehicle fails to comply with equipment requirements or is unsafe, and may issue citations to registered owners for violations found.

Courts issuing vehicle impoundment orders for speed contest or trick driving offenses must also order the Department of Motor Vehicles to rescind and cancel the vehicle's registration unless the owner completes a prescribed inspection.

Vehicle registration will be rescinded and cancelled if owners do not provide proof to the DMV within 30 days that cited equipment or safety violations have been corrected, or within 30 days after impoundment ends.

The DMV may grant extensions of up to 60 additional days for owners to complete necessary repairs if the vehicle remains registered and the owner demonstrates work is being performed.

Citations issued by peace officers for vehicle equipment or safety violations must be delivered to the DMV within 5 days; courts must forward impoundment and registration cancellation orders to the DMV within 5 days.
