School districts and charter schools must adopt policies requiring at least 20 minutes of outdoor recess each school day for pupils in kindergarten through grade 5

Recess cannot be denied for academic or behavioral reasons except when academic goals cannot otherwise be achieved or when safety concerns cannot be addressed through other means

Exemptions allowed for pupils unable to participate due to illness, disability, or physical limitations; indoor alternatives required when weather makes outdoor recess unsafe

Junior high, middle school, and high school students may receive elective credit for approved outdoor recreational activities completed outside school hours, including trail building, habitat restoration, survival skills, hiking, archery, and bird watching

Schools are not required to provide, facilitate, or fund outdoor recreational activities; effective date is July 1, 2025
