Health insurers, including public employee plans and local government self-insurance plans, are prohibited from solely using artificial intelligence or automated decision tools to deny, modify, or reduce prior authorization requests for medical or dental care, or to terminate previously approved coverage

Prior authorization requests for covered care must be approved unless a licensed health care professional with relevant clinical expertise determines the care is not medically necessary or is experimental/investigational after reviewing all available medical records

AI and automated tools may still be used to automatically approve prior authorization requests

Managed care organizations providing Medicaid or Children's Health Insurance Program coverage are exempt from these AI restrictions

Physicians, physician assistants, advanced practice registered nurses, and osteopathic physicians are encouraged to discuss stem cell therapy options with patients diagnosed with arthritis, osteoarthritis, or similar conditions, and to inform new patients about stem cell donation, banking, and storage options
