Healthcare professionals (physicians, nurses, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, therapists, dentists, nutritionists, and psychoanalysts) practicing in New York must complete department-approved coursework or training on early recognition and intervention for eating disorders by July 1, 2011.

Required training must consist of at least one hour of coursework covering physical, emotional, and behavioral indicators of eating disorders, developed in consultation with the Department of Health and consistent with standards established by Comprehensive Care Centers for Eating Disorders.

Professionals must attest to completion of the training at their first registration after July 1, 2011, except those subject to specific provisions of Public Health Law Section 2805-K(1)(f).

Department may grant exemptions to professionals who demonstrate no need for such training based on their practice nature, have completed equivalent training, or face other good cause preventing completion.

Hospitals and facilities may not grant or renew professional privileges to physicians who have not completed the required eating disorder training.
