Licensed pet dealers must install fire detection, alarm, and fighting equipment (including adequate fire extinguishers) appropriate to the building type and animals housed in all retail and wholesale establishments.

Automatic sprinkler systems with electrical supervision must be installed in all parts of buildings used to house animals, designed so animal housing areas remain protected even if non-animal areas are shut down.

Pet dealers must test fire equipment weekly and maintain it in good working order, with staff trained on equipment operation; sprinkler systems must be inspected monthly by a certified competent person.

Pet dealers must notify the fire department in advance of any disconnections to fire alarm or sprinkler systems and again when systems are reconnected.

Defines "pet dealer" as anyone selling more than nine animals per year for profit, with exemptions for certain breeders selling fewer than 25 animals annually from residential premises and incorporated humane societies; effective January 1, 2011.
