Licensed Master Social Workers and Licensed Clinical Social Workers must complete a minimum of 30 hours of acceptable formal continuing education during each three-year registration period to practice in New York State.

Exemptions from continuing education requirements include the first triennial registration period after licensure, health-related reasons certified by a healthcare professional, extended active duty with the U.S. Armed Forces, and inactive practice status upon filing a statement with the Department.

Licensees who fail to meet continuing education requirements cannot receive a standard triennial registration certificate but may receive a conditional registration certificate (valid up to one year) issued at the Department's discretion, with the same fee as standard registration.

Acceptable formal education includes collegiate-level courses, professional development programs from national/state/local professional associations, and other organized educational programs approved by the Department Commissioner.

A $45 mandatory continuing education fee is required, payable in addition to the triennial registration fee, and the act takes effect January 1, 2012.
