The Commissioner of Health shall promulgate regulations requiring student athletes to receive preventative cardiac screening to detect conditions that may lead to illness, injury, or death during strenuous physical activity.

Screening shall include advanced screening for the diagnosis of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, with specific types of screening to be determined by the Commissioner.

"Student athlete" is defined as any student participating in supervised sporting activities organized by public or private schools, or youth organizations providing supervised sporting opportunities.

Coaches and trainers of student athletes, whether paid or unpaid, must complete training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the correct use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs).

The Department of Health shall develop programs to provide CPR and AED training at various locations throughout the state at least four times per year.
