Licensed Master Social Workers and Licensed Clinical Social Workers must complete a minimum of 30 hours of acceptable formal continuing education during each three-year registration period to maintain licensure and practice in New York State.

Newly licensed social workers are exempt from continuing education requirements during their first triennial registration period, and exemptions may be granted for health reasons, extended active duty with the Armed Forces, or other good cause.

Social workers who fail to meet continuing education requirements may be issued a conditional registration certificate valid for up to one year, allowing continued practice while completing required courses; practicing without proper registration is subject to disciplinary proceedings.

Acceptable continuing education includes collegiate courses, professional development programs, and technical sessions offered by professional associations and other department-approved organizations, with the Department authorized to require specific subject areas as needed.

A mandatory continuing education fee of $45 is payable each triennial registration period in addition to the standard triennial registration fee; the act takes effect January 1, 2012.
