Adds a new definition of "autism" to the Mental Hygiene Law that encompasses five pervasive developmental disorders: Autistic Disorder, Asperger's Disorder, Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified, Rett's Disorder, and Childhood Disintegrative Disorder.

Defines Autistic Disorder as requiring at least six symptoms across three categories (social interaction impairment, communication impairment, and restricted/repetitive behaviors) with onset prior to age three.

Defines Asperger's Disorder as requiring qualitative impairment in social interaction and restricted/repetitive behaviors, with no clinically significant delays in language development or cognitive development.

Includes Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (atypical autism) for cases with severe impairments in social interaction and communication or stereotyped behaviors that do not meet criteria for a specific disorder.

Effective September 1, 2012.
