All school districts in New York State are required to establish and maintain a peace/conflict resolution center.

Peace/conflict resolution centers must provide supervised peer mediation of conflicts, develop pupil leadership skills, and promote peaceful atmospheres in schools and surrounding communities.

Legislation cites existing centers at Luperon and Heritage High Schools in Washington Heights as demonstrating that mediation reduces school violence, lowers suspension rates, and promotes constructive conflict management.

Act takes effect immediately upon enactment.
