All pet dealers licensed under the agriculture and markets law must install and maintain fire protection systems at all retail and wholesale establishments where animals are housed, sold, or traded.

Fire protection systems must be installed, inspected, tested, and maintained according to New York City Building Code and Fire Code (in the five boroughs) or the New York State Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code (outside the five boroughs).

Pet dealers must immediately notify the code enforcement office and restore any inoperative fire protection system to proper working order.

Requirements apply to both existing buildings and new construction, but do not apply to buildings zoned as residential.

The Commissioner of Agriculture and Markets must promulgate implementing rules and regulations within one year of the law's effective date; existing buildings have an additional year to comply.
