Level one sex offenders classified as low risk shall register annually for 20 years instead of an indefinite period, unless convicted of specific violent sexual offenses.

Level one sex offenders convicted of certain sexual abuse offenses against minors (Penal Law §130.25, §130.30, §130.40, §130.45, §130.55, §130.60) must register for life, except those under 21 at time of offense who register for 20 years.

Level one sex offenders convicted of more serious sexual offenses (including predatory and violent offenses) must register annually for life.

Sex offenders may petition for relief from registration after 20 years (reduced from 30 years) if they can prove by clear and convincing evidence their risk of reoffense no longer warrants registration.

Counties may establish residency restrictions limiting sex offenders to no more than 1,000 feet from schools and no more than a quarter mile from victims' homes or workplaces.
