Out-of-state firefighters with a second residence or military service in New York may volunteer on an ongoing basis with local volunteer fire companies or departments for emergency services, ambulance services, and training.

Fire companies or departments must obtain authorization from their local legislative body, board of fire commissioners, or town board before accepting out-of-state firefighter services.

Out-of-state firefighters must meet minimum certifications for active members and be in good standing with their home fire department to be accepted.

Accepted out-of-state firefighters receive all powers, rights, privileges, and immunities granted to New York volunteer firefighters while rendering services.

Out-of-state firefighters are excluded from participation in service award programs and health/disease benefit coverage provided under New York's volunteer firefighters' benefit law.
