Adds new definition to Penal Law Section 10.00: "Member of the military or reserves" includes members of U.S. armed forces (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, National Guard, reserves) and New York Guard or Naval Militia.

Expands murder in the first degree under Penal Law Section 125.27 to include intentional killing of a military or reserves member who was engaged in official duties, if defendant knew or reasonably should have known the victim's military status.

Changes gender-specific language throughout Section 125.27 from "his" to "his or her" to apply equally to all defendants.

Adds new subparagraph (xiv) to the list of circumstances qualifying for first-degree murder charges, making military/reserves members subject to the same protections as police officers and firefighters.

Takes effect immediately upon enactment.
