Extends minimum duration of orders of protection in domestic violence cases to no less than five years in Family Court proceedings (amending Family Court Act §842 and §1056, and Domestic Relations Law §240).

Increases minimum duration of orders of protection following criminal convictions for domestic violence felonies from eight to ten years in Criminal Procedure Law §530.12.

Increases minimum duration of orders of protection following criminal convictions for domestic violence class A misdemeanors from three to five years.

Requires courts to state on the record reasons for issuing or not issuing orders of protection, and specifies that absence of abuse during an existing order shall not alone justify denying extension.

Takes effect immediately, with provisions for criminal procedure amendments subject to expiration and reversion dates set forth in prior law.
