• Establishes criminal possession of a weapon by a domestic violence offender in the first degree as a class D felony for individuals convicted of specified domestic violence crimes (assault third degree, menacing, obstruction of breathing, unlawful imprisonment, coercion, criminal contempt, harassment, criminal trespass, arson fifth degree, or attempts thereof) who knowingly purchase or possess firearms or other weapons.

• Establishes criminal possession of a weapon by a domestic violence offender in the second degree as a class E felony for individuals convicted of criminal tampering in the third degree in a domestic violence context who knowingly purchase or possess firearms or other weapons.

• Both offenses apply only when the defendant and victim have been determined to be members of the same family or household as defined in CPL § 530.11 and the person has been deemed prohibited from possessing weapons due to their conviction.

• Includes provisions prohibiting individuals from purchasing weapons on behalf of or disposing of weapons to domestic violence offenders who are prohibited from possessing them.

• Takes effect 180 days after becoming law.
