Dr. James Mahoney, a pulmonary/critical care physician from Freeport, New York, died on April 27, 2020, at age 62 from COVID-19 complications while treating patients during the pandemic.

Mahoney graduated from SUNY Downstate College of Medicine in 1986, served as Chief Resident from 1989-1990, and joined the faculty as Assistant Professor of Medicine, winning multiple teaching awards including Teacher of the Year.

He continued treating COVID-positive patients at SUNY Downstate and NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County without taking time off, making house calls to patients and conducting telemedicine sessions from home.

The New York State Senate designates Mahoney as recipient of the Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed by the Senate, awarded for exceptional, heroic, or humanitarian acts on behalf of fellow New Yorkers.

A copy of the resolution will be transmitted to Mahoney's family, including his father Oscar, three children, two brothers, two sisters, and life partner Dawn Havens.
