Monroe County deputy sheriffs-civil become eligible to retire after 25 years of credited service without regard to age, with a pension of one-fiftieth of final average salary per year of service (not exceeding 50% of final average salary).

Monroe County must adopt a resolution by December 31, 2023, and file it with the Comptroller to make these retirement benefits available to sheriffs, undersheriffs, deputy sheriffs, and correction officers.

The resolution may allow past service costs to be paid over either a 5-year or 10-year period, and must be accompanied by an affidavit from the county's chief executive officer confirming receipt of a cost estimate from the retirement system.

Members subject to Article 14 of the Retirement and Social Security Law may make an irrevocable election by December 31, 2023, or within one year of employment to forfeit Article 14 benefits and instead receive the 25-year service retirement benefit.

Monroe County bears all past service costs associated with implementing these provisions, estimated at approximately $199,000 as a one-time payment.
