Training must cover HIV and STI transmission routes, testing benefits, informed consent, working with allied health professionals, and providing respectful care for patients of all sexual orientations and gender identities.

Registered nurses and licensed practical nurses must complete similar HIV and STI testing coursework every four years, with standards consistent with those established for physicians.

Medical students, medical residents, and physician assistant students must complete the training as part of their orientation programs.

Exemptions are available for professionals who demonstrate no practical need for the training based on their practice type or who have completed equivalent coursework, with exemptions requiring reapplication every four years.
