Commissioner of Corrections must provide an annual report to legislative leaders and committee chairs by March 31, 2024, and every year thereafter on inmate mortality investigations.

Annual report must include cause of death, circumstances, inmate age, sentence, demographics (gender, race, ethnicity), commitment offense, facility information, location of death, and whether inmate received specialized care or was in disciplinary confinement.

Report must analyze trends in inmate mortality and compare to historical statistical data, including whether remains were retrieved by next of kin or buried on prison grounds.

Within seven days of any death from suicide or other causes, department must provide preliminary report to same recipients identifying the deceased, death circumstances, investigation status, and whether any staff or other inmates were injured or referred for prosecution.

Takes effect 120 days after becoming law.
