Substitution is permitted only when the prescriber has not marked the prescription "dispense as written."

Pharmacists must inform the patient of the alternate option and obtain written consent before dispensing the substitute.

Pharmacists must counsel the patient on proper usage and operating features of the alternate epinephrine auto-injector.
