Extends minimum duration of orders of protection in domestic violence cases to no less than five years under the Family Court Act and Domestic Relations Law, replacing previous variable timeframes.

Increases minimum duration of criminal orders of protection for felony domestic violence convictions from eight years to ten years, and for Class A misdemeanors from five years to six years.

Requires courts to state reasons on the record for issuing or denying orders of protection in domestic violence cases.

Applies changes to orders issued under Family Court Act section 842, Family Court Act section 1056, Domestic Relations Law section 240, and Criminal Procedure Law section 530.12.

Takes effect immediately upon enactment.
