Removes the requirement for 7 years of professional training (2-5 years post-secondary education plus work experience) and instead requires applicants to meet educational requirements set by national certifying organizations approved by the commissioner.

Replaces the requirement to pass a separate state examination on fire, safety, and building codes with verification that the applicant has passed an examination from an approved national certifying organization and holds a certificate in good standing.

Adds a new exemption allowing architects licensed under article 147 of education law to be exempt from the educational requirements for interior designer certification.

Makes gender-neutral language changes throughout the statute, replacing "him or her" with "the applicant."

Effective January 1 following enactment, with authorization for the department to adopt necessary rules and regulations immediately.
