Female veterans and spouses of female veterans residing in New York may request license plates bearing the words "Female Veteran" upon proof of veteran status satisfactory to the commissioner.

Only one distinctive plate per household may be issued; if the veteran receives the plate, the spouse cannot obtain one.

A one-time service charge of $10 is required in addition to the regular registration fee prescribed under section 401 of the vehicle and traffic law.

A $6,000 surety bond must be delivered to the Department of Motor Vehicles before plate design and production, unless at least 200 orders are received prior to design; all service charges are deposited to the distinctive plate development fund.

The bond may be discontinued if 200 or more plates are sold within two years of availability; if fewer are sold, the department may recover against the bond proportionally.
