Nonpublic schools must provide and maintain on-site automated external defibrillator (AED) equipment in each instructional facility in quantities and types deemed adequate by the education commissioner in consultation with the health commissioner.

At least one staff person trained in AED operation must be present during school-sponsored or school-approved curricular and extracurricular events; AED equipment must be provided on-site for school-sponsored competitive athletic events held at locations other than school facilities.

Only persons who have completed training approved by a nationally-recognized organization or the state emergency medical services council may operate an AED, with exceptions for licensed health care practitioners, certified emergency medical services personnel, and good samaritan actors.

Nonpublic schools must immediately report every AED use to the appropriate local emergency medical services system and notify the regional emergency services council of the existence, location, and type of all AEDs they possess.

Schools must post signage at main entrances indicating where AEDs are stored and maintained; AED operation is considered first aid and does not constitute unlawful practice of a profession; the act takes effect July 1, 2025.
