Allows fire department members who are employees of the fire district to be nominated and appointed as fire chief or assistant fire chief, removing prior restrictions on employee eligibility.

Applies to both April nomination meetings (subdivision 11-a) and alternative September or December meetings (subdivision 11-b) for officer selection.

Clarifies that when a chief or assistant chief is a district employee, the board of fire commissioners retains supervisory authority over them regarding their employment duties.

Updates gender-specific language throughout the statute from "he/his" to "their/such person" for neutral terminology.

Takes effect immediately upon enactment.
