Licensed psychologists in New York could obtain prescriptive authority to prescribe, administer, and discontinue psychotropic medications for psychiatric, mental, cognitive, nervous, emotional, or behavioral disorders after completing additional education and training requirements

Conditional prescribing certification requires a doctoral-level psychology license, a master's degree in clinical psychopharmacology from an accredited institution, 80 hours of clinical practicum training in physical assessment, passing a nationally recognized examination, and malpractice insurance

Conditional certification is valid for two years and requires psychologists to maintain an ongoing collaborative relationship with a licensed physician, nurse practitioner, or other qualified clinician who oversees the patient's general medical care

Full prescriptive authority certification can be obtained after completing two years of prescribing under conditional certification, with mandatory 25 hours of annual continuing education for renewal

The State Board for Psychology must include at least two prescribing psychologists among its minimum eleven members to assist with professional licensing and conduct matters related to prescriptive authority
