Requires all New York counties except Lewis County and Madison County to abolish the office of coroner

Boards of supervisors retain power to abolish the coroner office and create a medical examiner office by local law, subject to permissive referendum, at least 150 days before any general election

Terms of all sitting coroners expire upon appointment and qualification of a medical examiner, after which no coroners shall be elected in the county

Takes effect January 1 following enactment
