Deputy sheriffs who provided police protection or correction officer services may transfer service credit from the NY State and Local Employees' Retirement System (NYSLERS) to the NY State and Local Police and Fire Retirement System (NYSLPFRS) for eligibility under 20-year or 25-year retirement plans

Members must have at least one year of deputy sheriff service and elect to transfer within one year of joining NYSLPFRS or within one year of the law's effective date

Transferred service credit is calculated using salary and billing rate multipliers determined by system actuaries, and cannot exceed 10 years or the original service credit earned in NYSLERS

If a member transfers back to NYSLERS, the full amount of deputy sheriff service credit is restored to that system

Estimated cost is approximately 20% of an affected member's compensation for each year of additional service credit granted, shared by the state and local participating employers
