Building owners must submit a compliance plan to the local code enforcement agency within 2 years of the law's effective date, with full sprinkler installation completed within 5 years

Extensions of up to 2 additional years may be granted upon demonstration of hardship as determined by the code enforcement authority

Owners who fail to comply face civil penalties of up to $1,000 per day of noncompliance after the final deadline

Landmarks and historical buildings are exempt from the sprinkler retrofit requirements
