New York Senate Resolution honoring Dr. Afia Wilson for receiving the Medical Excellence Award in Colorectal Surgery from Young, Gifted, & Black Entrepreneurial Awards, Inc. on February 25, 2026

Dr. Wilson is recognized as a pioneer in colorectal surgery for leading adoption of the NICE procedure (Natural Orifice Intracorporeal Anastomosis with Transrectal Specimen Extraction), a minimally invasive technique reducing recovery time and postoperative pain

Currently serves as Chair of General Surgery Resident Research, overseeing studies in robot-assisted colorectal surgery, rib and sternal plating, and predictive modeling for surgical outcomes

Holds a Bachelor of Science from Howard University, Doctor of Medicine from St. George's University, and Master of Public Health from George Washington University

Works to expand advanced surgical access in underserved hospitals and integrates population-level healthcare perspectives into her practice
