Kitchen served 5 years active duty as a Naval Aviator and flight instructor, then 21 years in the Naval Reserve, retiring as Commander

He holds degrees from Rochester Institute of Technology (BS, 1965), Indiana University (MS in Education, 1966), and SUNY Buffalo Law School (JD, 1976), and has practiced law since 1976 in local, state, and federal courts

His community leadership includes serving as President of Christian Counseling Ministries of Western New York, President of Clarence Toastmasters Club, and Elder at Love Joy Gospel Church

Born in Buffalo in 1943, Kitchen has been married to his wife Nancy since 1967 and has three children
