Expands the list of protected medical personnel under New York's assault in the second degree statute (Section 120.05) to include physicians, physician assistants, health care providers, primary care practitioners, nurse practitioners, certified nursing assistants, ambulance personnel, hospital directors, medical directors, and hospital employees, attendants, agents, and volunteers

Replaces the previous limited protection for only "registered nurses" and "licensed practical nurses" with comprehensive coverage for a broad range of healthcare workers

Makes it a crime of assault in the second degree to intentionally cause physical injury to these medical personnel while preventing them from performing lawful duties, or to intentionally cause physical injury to them while they are performing assigned duties

Defines covered hospitals by reference to Section 2801 of the Public Health Law

Takes effect 60 days after becoming law
