Requires all New York counties except Lewis County and Madison County to abolish the office of coroner

Allows county boards of supervisors to abolish the coroner office and create a medical examiner office by local law, subject to permissive referendum, at least 150 days before a general election

Terminates the terms of all sitting coroners upon appointment and qualification of a medical examiner, after which no coroners will be elected in the county

Takes effect on January 1 following enactment
