Creates a new crime of "assault in the second degree on a police officer or peace officer" as a class C felony for intentionally causing physical injury to such officers to prevent them from performing lawful duties, including by releasing or failing to control an animal

Removes police officers and peace officers from the existing second-degree assault statute (section 120.05) that covers assaults on various public employees like prosecutors, nurses, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel

Upgrades assault on a peace officer, police officer, firefighter, or emergency medical services professional causing serious physical injury from a class C felony to a class B felony

Upgrades aggravated assault upon a police officer or peace officer (causing serious physical injury with a deadly weapon or dangerous instrument) from a class B felony to a class A felony

Takes effect on the first of November following enactment
