Creates a new crime of "assault on a police officer causing physical injury" as a class C felony, separating police officers from the existing assault in the second degree statute covering other protected workers

Increases the penalty for assault on a peace officer, police officer, firefighter, or emergency medical services professional causing serious physical injury from a class C felony to a class B felony

Elevates aggravated assault upon a police officer or peace officer (causing serious physical injury with a deadly weapon or dangerous instrument) from a class B felony to a class A felony

Updates gendered language throughout the penal law sections ("he or she" changed to "the actor" or "such person," "his" changed to "their")

Takes effect immediately upon passage
