Expands the list of protected medical personnel under New York's assault in the second degree statute (Penal Law § 120.05) to include physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, certified nursing assistants, ambulance personnel, hospital directors, medical directors, and hospital employees, attendants, agents, and volunteers

Previously, the law only specifically protected registered nurses and licensed practical nurses among nursing professionals; this amendment broadens coverage to all nursing professionals and healthcare providers

Adds protection for assaults committed with intent to prevent these medical providers from performing lawful duties, or with intent to cause physical injury while they are performing assigned duties

Updates gendered language in the statute from "he or she causes" to "they cause"

Takes effect 90 days after becoming law
