Amends Criminal Procedure Law section 160.57 to add fire departments and fire companies to the list of entities authorized to access sealed criminal records for employment purposes

Allows prospective employers to conduct background checks on applicants for both volunteer firefighter and paid firefighter positions

Requires that applicants be furnished with a copy of all records obtained through the background check and given an opportunity to provide an explanation

Takes effect immediately upon passage
