HB 83 Summary

• Requires all school district employees and private school bus operators to immediately report any assault on students, employees, or operators occurring on school premises, at school-sponsored events, or on school buses to the principal or superintendent.

• Mandates principals report assaults to superintendents within 24 hours, and superintendents must immediately notify law enforcement authorities of the incident.

• Establishes similar assault reporting requirements for community schools (section 3314.39) and STEM schools (section 3326.26), with reports made to principals or chief administrative officers.

• Provides civil immunity for school employees, principals, superintendents, and administrators who report assaults or notify law enforcement in good faith compliance with the law.

• Adds an exception to Ohio's general crime reporting statute (section 2921.22) for school employees regarding assaults that another school employee is required to report.
