H.B. 519 Summary

• Requires school district boards of education to install metal detectors at entrances to every classroom building unless granted a waiver by the Superintendent of Public Instruction.

• Authorizes the Attorney General, in consultation with the Superintendent of Public Instruction and the Ohio School Facilities Commission, to adopt rules prescribing standards for acquisition, installation, and operation of metal detectors in school buildings.

• Allows boards of education to obtain a waiver by submitting an affidavit from the board president stating the board is unable to comply with the metal detector requirement, which the Superintendent shall grant upon receipt.

• Extends metal detector requirements to community schools, science/technology/engineering/mathematics schools, and college-preparatory boarding schools, requiring their governing authorities and operators to comply as if they were school district boards of education.
