HCR 57 Summary

• Urges the U.S. Congress to admit Puerto Rico to the Union as a state in response to a November 6, 2012 referendum in which Puerto Rico residents voted to change the island's status.

• Affirms that all Puerto Rico residents are U.S. citizens (granted citizenship through the Jones-Shafroth Act of March 2, 1917) who pledge allegiance to the United States flag and serve in the military.

• Asserts that Puerto Rico residents have withdrawn their consent to be governed as an unincorporated territory and have expressed their collective will to be admitted as a state with full rights and responsibilities.

• Directs the Ohio House Clerk to transmit copies of the resolution to the U.S. House Speaker and Minority Leader, U.S. Senate Majority and Minority Leaders, Ohio's Congressional delegation, and Ohio news media.
