HB 285 Summary
-
Applies to individuals who retire on or after the bill's effective date from Ohio's state public retirement systems (PERS, STRS, SERS, OPFPF) and are subsequently re-employed as public employees.
-
Re-employed retirees forfeit the pension portion of their retirement allowance during the period of new employment; the annuity portion is suspended and recalculated upon termination of employment.
-
Neither the re-employed retiree nor their employer shall contribute to the retirement system on the retiree's behalf during the new employment period.
-
The bill repeals prior provisions allowing certain retirees (particularly former elected officials) to work under different forfeiture rules and requires employer notification to retirement boards within the month employment commences.
-
Coordinates with parallel provisions across multiple state retirement systems (PERS, STRS, SERS, OPFPF) to ensure consistent treatment of re-employed retirees across all systems.
