HJR 8 Summary

• Proposes constitutional amendments to institute and modify term limits for elected and appointed officials in Ohio, to be submitted to voters at a special election on May 6, 2014.

• Increases state legislators' term limits: state senators from 2 successive four-year terms (8 years) to 3 successive four-year terms (12 years); state representatives from 4 successive two-year terms (8 years) to 6 successive two-year terms (12 years).

• Establishes 8-year successive term limits for President of the Senate and Speaker of the House of Representatives.

• Institutes 12-year successive term limits for judicial officers, retired judges serving on active duty, members of boards of education, state board of education members, and county, township, and municipal officials.

• Creates the Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board with 13 members to establish standards governing livestock and poultry care, with 12-year term limits for appointed board members (excluding ex-officio members).
