S.B. No. 80 Summary

• Pharmacy interns working under a pharmacist's direct supervision may administer the same immunizations as licensed pharmacists, including influenza (for ages 14+), pneumonia, tetanus, hepatitis A and B, meningitis, diphtheria, and pertussis (for ages 18+), and other immunizations approved by the state board of pharmacy.

• Both pharmacists and pharmacy interns must complete an approved immunization administration course, maintain basic life-support certification, and practice according to a physician-established protocol approved by the state board of pharmacy.

• Pharmacists may administer epinephrine or diphenhydramine to individuals experiencing adverse reactions to immunizations administered by the pharmacist or pharmacy intern.

• Pharmacists and pharmacy interns must observe patients for adverse reactions and notify family physicians or local health departments (within 30 days) for non-influenza immunizations; parental permission is required for influenza vaccines given to individuals ages 14-17.

• The state board of pharmacy must adopt rules implementing the section in consultation with the state medical board and board of nursing.
